Sunday in bits and pieces

8:46 a.m. –  I just came in from my morning run, my second in two days. I’m not sure I should actually be running two days in a row. I think I’m supposed to give my body a day in between to recover. But it’s hard to pass up a chance to get out there when I have the time and feel motivated. Too often, I’m trying to figure out how to maintain any kind of consistency. And I did well again today too. I saw an egret on my route today. I have a habit of watching the pavement while I run. It keeps me from looking too far ahead and subconsciously convincing myself I’ll never make it. So I look down and only concentrate on the next step. But I looked up at one point and there was the egret. He was just standing in the grass at the top of an embankment above one of the ponds. I was running right towards him, and he didn’t seem to mind. I didn’t want to scare him off though, so I veered over to the other side of the street. He took flight anyway. Egrets are amazing birds. They’re sort of gangly looking with their long, curved necks and such long legs, but their flight is so graceful. Amazing.

I had the luxury of sleeping in again this morning. It was after 7:00 before  I rolled out of bed. Ironically, we didn’t have to be at the ball fields early this morning as Kacey’s softball team was eliminated from the tournament already yesterday. No one expected it and it wasn’t any one girl’s fault. In fact, Kacey had several amazing throw downs to second base to get the out. They lost their first game to a team whose pitcher was so slow, our girls couldn’t adjust the timing of their swings. When they did manage to hit the ball, their swings were off so much that all they accomplished was popping the ball up in the air for an easy out. The pitcher had just enough consistency though to throw a few strikes and in the end, our girls just couldn’t get the runners around the bases. They only had one more game later in the day, a loss to a team that was simply on fire. I think they were all stunned to be knocked out so soon. It was hard to believe. However, due to their first place finish in the league, we think they’ve still earned a berth to the state tournament next weekend.

Brad’s girlfriend, Heather called me yesterday while I was at the ball fields waiting for the first game to begin. She wanted to know if anyone would be home at our house today.  She was hoping to come down for the day and surprise Brad. I told her I’d make sure he was home and she was welcome to come. Of course, he called me later in the day and said he was probably going to go fishing this morning. I told him he couldn’t. His response was, “You’re kidding. Right?” I assured him I wasn’t and that I needed his help around the house. He was NOT happy. He thought I was kidding. At twenty years old, he’s not used to having to get his mom’s permission to do something like go fishing. He just “informs” me out of courtesy. And he’s definitely not used to being told he can’t go somewhere. He’ll understand and hopefully forgive me when Heather shows up at the door later this morning.

There’s lots to do around the house today and I have to go get in the shower so I’m not sweaty and stinky when Heather arrives.

2:22 p.m. - Heather showed up this morning just as I finished drying my hair. Brad was very happy to see her and got over his irritation with me.  My parents’ dog – who we are dog-sitting this week (did I mention that?) was not happy to see Heather’s dog, but they made peace with each other. I made breakfast for everyone – cheesy hash browns and eggs over-easy. I realized my kitchen is too small for the number of people in this house when every one of them is in there making toast, looking for jelly, trying to decide what kind of fruit they want and pouring glasses of milk and all the while, I’m trying to cook for them!

I got some cleaning done; the main stuff that was going to bug me if it didn’t get done TODAY. Then Brad wanted to know what “we” were going to do today. I said if he was asking me to join him and Heather in their social activities and if he was going to leave it up to me, of course, I was going to suggest bowling. (I’m trying to learn how to throw that new ball. My scores have decreased significantly since I bought it.) He and Heather were more than happy to go bowling with me, so off we went. There were major improvements in my scores! I’m looking forward to Wednesday leagues again.

3:12 p.m. – Just bought a new dishwasher. (You had no idea my life was this exciting, did you?) The computer board on the old one went out for the third time. It ticks me off that I have just purchased my fourth dishwasher since moving in twenty years ago when I am still on my first stove. Washing dishes by hand for the past five days, however has afforded me a new appreciation for dishwashers.

3:38 p.m. – Mark is meowing at Heather’s dog, Dacotah in an effort to get her riled up. He does not make a convincing cat and Dacotah is not fooled. So Mark has quickly given up on being a cat and has decided to fix the screen on our front door, which my parents’ dog, Bear tried to break through yesterday. I didn’t see it happen, but the neighbors dog wandered into our yard and Bear went charging at the front door. I’m presuming he didn’t see the screen and thought he could just go right through. Jake said he bounced off and looked a little stunned, but was none the worse for wear. He bent the frame, which now must be repaired or replaced.

4:54 p.m. – Preparing to put some steaks and potatoes on the grill for dinner. Grilling on a warm summer day requires beer. I need to go find a beer.

6:38 p.m. – Dinner was ok. Jake was gone at work and Kacey was off hanging out with friends, so it was just Mark, Brad, Heather and me. I didn’t like the steaks and I didn’t think the corn was very good either. Brad looked at me like I had horns growing out of my head. I asked him if he really liked the food, and he reminded me I was feeding poor college students. Of course they liked it. Afterwards, Mark had some fun with Dacotah and a laser pointer.

(Sorry for the not-so-great cell phone video.)

7:07 p.m. – Nothing prior to this paragraph was anything close to earth shattering. (That’s ok, though. I appreciate a quiet, mellow Sunday on the rare occasion that we get one.) The day is winding down and I can almost guarantee that nothing exciting is going to happen between now and the time I hit the sack. So I think I’ll wrap this up.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

  • Quiet Sundays are cool…I went for my second run in two days too (that hasn’t been too frequent lately…)

Men are always forgiving when you help deliver women to them…I am sure you MORE than get a pass on this one…

  • Sounds like we are going through much of the same home repairs. We have a new screen door to install, buying a new dishwasher is next on the list. Current one is over 20 years old. Not sure about the 14 year old water heater.
We also had steak for dinner but with rice & veggies from the garden. I love family weekends where “nothing close to earth-shattering” happens.

Hope the rest of the week goes smoothly!

  • Sounds like one of our weekends where I am always fixing something broke. Irritates me to no end to have to replace a garage door opener that I just bought 12 years ago. Nothing gets more attention than having a broken dishwasher (after you have had one). Mark sounds like one sick guy (a man after my own heart). I’ve been feeding my new mut animal crackers and make meowing sounds when he eats the cat crackers.

  • You ought to try one of those “day in the life” blog-days where you blog every hour…

  • This reminds me of the Steven Curtis Chapman song “Signs of Life”.

  • Sounds like a nice day. A little enjoyment, some chores. Typical I guess. Perhaps you could use a housekeeper.

My son’s dog goes crazy withthe laser pointer too. Thats funny eh?

  • Sounds like you had quite a day. You did a lot more than I did. Jules and I went out to my mom and dad’s house this weekend just to relax.

It’s cool that Brad and Heather were interested in bringing you along; proof that you’re an awesome mom. :)

  • A new dishwasher! How more exciting can it get!
(Other than a houseful of animals).

  • What a cute pooch!! I had no idea that dogs went for lasers too. I thought that was just cats.

I had the same problem as the girls on Kacey’s team for a few at bats this weekend. The pitches were so meaty and easy to hit, my weight came forward before my hands and and it resulted in lazy pop-ups. A guy on my team (who played for the Korean national team) told me what was happening, so I adjusted by keeping my weight back on my right leg and hit a couple of lasers. No charge for the coaching!!

  • I had to chuckle a bit over your fib to Brad about why he couldn’t go fishing! A rude awakening for sure to him but all with a good ending to it.
The dishwasher dilemma -hmmm -maybe I am better off with the plain old hand-washing of the dishes after all. With my luck and if we ever get a dishwasher, it will probably be breaking every two years thinking since the son-in-law is a mechanic that he can fix household appliances too. And we all know how repairs around the house never take priority, don’t we?
Glad you had a nice, relaxing type of Sunday though.

  • You always seem to have the most fun-filled (and packed) weekends! :) And I think many of us have been there with the dishwasher dilema!

Thinking of you always. Stop by when you can! **hugs**

  • Oooohh I like new, shiny appliances :) :) I am excited for you!

  • Hooray for new dishwashers!

  • Sounds like a very nice relaxed day, nevertheless you got quite a bit done.
I liked the intermittent updates through the day.
